1990s Toys: Beanie Babies, Pokemon, Tickle Me Elmo

The incredible demand created for toys in the 1990’s marked a new height in American consumerism.  The toys that came out in the 1990s were collected by children and adults, and there were many that were enjoyed by both groups. Here is a quick look at some of the more popular toys in the 1990s. The marketing behind Beanie Babies was what really led to their success.  All different kinds of beanie babies were made and sold, but certain collections were produced in limited quantities, making them rare and valuable. Thanks to the internet, people who had gotten a hold of them were able to sell them for a tremendous profit.  Beanie Babies have since dropped in popularity, but there are no doubt collections in basements waiting for a day when they’re once again valuable.

The craze behind Pokemon could not have been predicted, but thanks to an abundance of toys, Pokemon is still on Christmas wish lists for kids today.  Originally a in Japan, it hit a huge success before being brought over to the U.S..  With the success of the video games, a T.V. series, and later card game, Pokemon has survived almost 12 years as one of the most desired game franchises.

Tickle Me Elmo was another toy that reflected the Christmas consumerism that had been a huge event since the 1980’s.  But, the Tickle Me Elmo doll trumped everything before thanks to the Iinternet.  Because of the toy’s promotion on a talk show, the demand was much greater than the supply.  Some people ended up being trampled over the toy. It was also being sold for outrageous prices on Ebay.

What are some of your favorite toys from the 1990s?

Usually the 'limosine liberals' have the least diverse circle of freinds.

The most?? Go to any working-class bar. You'll see white, blacks, hispanics etc. rubbing elbows with cross-dressers, gays or whomever.

  5. use your brain says:

Doubting God is sin, but all of us are human and we all sin and we all doubt. This does not mean that your salvation is in question. You are saved no matter how you feel. You may not feel saved, but you are. The fact that you are worrying about this proves it. Unsaved people don't even think about these things, let alone worry about them. God loves you. You are not alone, He promised that he would never leave us or forsake us. His Word is true, He cannot lie. When you doubt, ask God to forgive you in Jesus name. He will forgive you. Remember, we go on facts, not feelings. I am married. That is a fact. What if I wake up one day and on that particular day I don't feel married. The fact is, I am married, no matter how I feel. Feelings change from one minute to the next. They are unreliable. Don't let your feelings get the upper hand. Stick to the facts, that you have repented of your sin, and received the free gift of salvation that Jesus gives us. Sing hymns and choruses, read your Bible. Psalms is particularly good to help depression. I will be praying for you. Never give up. God will not let go of your hand, he will hold you up.

I love it when everyone blames the Yankees for the spiraling salaries in MLB; but if one looks at history it was not the Yankees who signed A-rod to the outrageous salary. Nor was it the Yankees that gave Kevin Brown his stupid salary. Kenny Williams would you please ask your boss Jerry Reinsdorf about all that money he gave to that psycho Albert Belle after saying baseball owners needed to exercise financial restraint.

As long as the fans are willing to pay those outrageous prices for tickets and refreshments the owner will charge it

Definitely NOT what you paid for them. The market is so flooded with them. You can find them at yard sales, flea markets, etc as cheap as 50 cents. I honestly don't know what they are worth. It all depends on how bad someone wants certain ones and what they are willing to pay for them.

  16. Reiko says:

There is only one dream that I can accuratly remember after all these years.
I dreamt that Me and my entire family were in England (or a guess because of the old fashioned roads that were there).
Somehow A tsunami was coming and all the children including myself were forced into this gold dome that somehow was safe from the tsunami. I remember myself (wearing a jean jacket for some reason) trying to get my mom to go with me (we are very close). But she has food poisoning and watched as my mom and dad were washed away from the waves. Yet somehow I did not mourn. Afterwords all the kids were realeased and I tried to find my family. But all I could find were my grandparents who were hiding IN a statue cam out and told me the bad news.

It ended with me crying silently in the backseat of the car being taken with them while we started driving into stormy weather.

People reading into this don't understand the significance of TW 12. Augusta National has NEVER allowed anyone to make a video game utilizing the golf course. This is actually a very big deal. I never liked TW and rooted against him until now. What he did off course was WRONG but his off course activities did not get him the video game deal. I look for him to have a big year this year with a swing back on track.

Try Googling Syberia, that's also an excellent adventure game.

Then there's Runaway, Runaway 2, Monkey Island, Jack Orlando, Sam and Max, Beneath a Steel Sky, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Agon…in short, there are some fantastic, cheap adventure games out there just waiting for you to play them. Get Googling mate and enjoy!

Im a huge D Wade fan and have been since 2004 but he can't do that LOL. The NBA is right because he doesn't have the injury anymore and his name "Flash" is on it. Kids can go out and buy it because he wears it and the NBA shouldn't be a place to do that. If Wade can do this then that gives anyone in the NBA the right to do anything like it. That is like Chris Webber wearing a C-Webb headband LOL.

I do remember KG doing the chalk thing before LeBron ever did. He stole it and made it famous somehow. But KG did do the same thing.

LeBron is not making money by doing the chalk thing b4 every game. Commercial is a differ net story

  50. edholzman says:

Based on widely-known card game (Oh Hell!), players use the deck of cards ranked 0-15 in six suits to bid for a particular number of tricks and then subsequently take exactly that many. Each game consists of ten hands, with the hand size shrinking by one each time, until the final one-card hand. Along the way, trump is randomly determined and can be changed during the hand through the use of special cards. There are also special cards which make the trump not count for a trick, others which can be declared any suit and value when played and others which will give bonuses or penalties for taking the trick in which they're played.

The most recent version of this game is being produced by Fundex Games (the makers of Phase 10). You can buy a copy from an online game store such as here:

    Have fun!

  52. fairyjin1971 says:

very very ticklish. in fact, if you thought about it hard enough and pointed at me, i would probably start squirming and laughing.

it depends on how the tickling is happening. when it was from my teasing older brother, or the uncle who thinks it's funny, it's torture. (tickling is considered a form of torture.) when the person won't stop, i'll kick and thrash and they deserve what happens because i panic and think of nothing but escaping at any cost.

when my guy tickles me, it's in a cute way, very light and he knows not to take it too far. it's affectionate, teasing with respect to my limits. but, if even he took it too far, then i'm throwing elbows out with feeling! tickle me elmo doesn't bother me because i feel it's meant in the affectionate way…although you made me think about it in a way i hadn't before.

The treaty provided for the Mexican Cession of 1.36 million km² (525,000 square miles) to the United States in exchange for 15 million dollars (equivalent to $380 million today).[4] The Treaty also ceded an additional 1,007,935 km² (389,166 square miles), since Mexico had never officially recognized either the independence of the Republic of Texas (1836) or its annexation by the United States (1845), and under this calculation, Mexico lost about 55% of its prewar territory.[5]

Excuse me? Yes, the United States played better through the majority of the game, but Japan wanted to win more than the U.S. It clearly shows by Japan's late goals in regulation and in OT. Ask around the world and almost anyone will say the USWNT is the best in the world, but they did not finish that game playing their all. I think they got a little over-confident. Don't be mad at Japan just because they beat the United States in the final.
